Assault 1st Degree/Child Abuse-  On July 4, 2019, Dep. Forinash responded to the 22000 block of Valley Estates Drive in Lexington Park for the reported disturbance.  Investigation determined Ebony Veronique Mullins, age 34 of Lexington Park, was in an argument with the victim. During the argument, Mullins grabbed the victim by the victim's hair and began striking the victim.  The victim was thrown to the ground by Mullins, and the altercation was stopped by witnesses.  Mullins then followed the victim outside and picked up a machete, and began swinging it at the victim.  Mullins was disarmed by witnesses at which time she grabbed a brick and attempted to strike the victim.  Mullins was arrested and charged with Assault 1st & 2nd Degree and Child Abuse-2nd Degree-Custodian.  CASE# 38402-19

Robbery/Assault- On July 4, 2019, DFC. Muschette responded to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, for the reported assault.  Investigation determined Markus Javar Handon, age 25 of California, entered the victim's cell, assaulted the victim, and then stole the victim's commissary items.  Handon was charged with Robbery, Assault 2nd Degree and Theft.  CASE# 38441-19

Trespassing-  On July 4, 2019, DFC. Muschette responded to the 21600 block of Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, to locate Shuree Sinese Weems, age 38 with no fixed address, regarding a trespassing complaint.  Weems was located on Great Mills Road, also trespassing on different property.  Weems had previously been served a notice not to trespass at the various locations.  Weems was arrested and charged with Trespassing.  CASE# 38419-19

Assault- On July 6, 2019, Cpl. Tirpak responded to the 39000 block of Golden Beach Road in Mechanicsville, for the reported assault.  Investigation determined Brandon Ryan Harris, age 20 of Mechanicsville, assaulted the victim, and then prevented the victim from calling law enforcement.  Harris ripped the victim's shirt, and struck the victim in the face causing injury.  A second victim in the residence attempted to call law enforcement and was also assaulted by Harris. Harris hid the victim's phone and also broke a pair of the victim's glasses.  Harris was located and charged with two counts of Assault 2nd Degree and Malicious Destruction of Property.  CASE# 38752-19

Assault/Drug Arrest-  On July 6, 2019, Dep. Kilgore responded to the 21300 block of Castaway Circle in Lexington Park, for the reported assault.  Investigation determined Levi NMN Hurley, age 52 of Lexington Park, assaulted the victim by punching the victim in the face, causing injury.  Hurley was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree.  Located on Hurley's person were two cut straws containing suspected Xanex residue. Hurley was also charged with CDS: Possession-Paraphernalia and CDS: Possession-Not Marijuana.  CASE# 38723-19

Assault-  On July 7, 2019, Cpl. Beishline responded to the 44000 block of Swift Fox Drive in California, for the reported assault.  Investigation determined Deborah Ann Merkle, age 38 of California, struck the victim with a broom handle, causing injury.  Merkle was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree.  CASE# 38990-19

Drug Arrest-  On July 9, 2019, a traffic stop was conducted in the area of Three Notch Road and Old Flora Corner Road in Mechanicsville.  The vehicle operator was identified as Barbara Ann Ball, age 58 of Mechanicsville.  While on the traffic stop, a Sheriff's Office K-9 alerted on the vehicle for narcotics.  Ball was found to be in possession of suspected Fentanyl and was charged with CDS: Possession-Not Marijuana by Dep. Trespassing-  On July 9, 2019, Dep. Physical and Written Testing this Saturday for Potential Deputies and Corrections Officers

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is holding its next round of physical agility and written testing for potential deputies, correctional officers and cadets on the morning of Saturday, July 13, 2019, at the agency headquarters in Leonardtown. The testing is not open to walk-ins.

However, the next round of physical agility and written testing for the Sheriff’s Office is scheduled in October. Applicants must complete and return a Personal History Statement to qualify for the next round of testing.

The application process is outlined at https://www.firstsheriff.com/applicationprocess.asp. The Personal History Statement (PHS) must be completed, printed and each page initialed at the bottom. At the end of the PHS ensure to have the Authorization for Release of Personal Information Form # 206 notarized. The entire Personal History Statement must be received by Sept. 27, 2019 for applicants to participate in the testing in October.

The Personal History Statement along with the notarized Authorization for Release of Personal Information Form # 206 can be delivered in person to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Headquarters at 23150 Leonard Hall Drive in Leonardtown or mailed to:

Applicants must pass the preliminary screening conditions to advance to the agility testing.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office offers sign-on bonuses for Deputies and Correctional Officers, annual compensation education bonuses and foreign and sign language stipends.

Deputies and Correctional Officers receive a $1,500 sign-on bonus paid in three installments: $500 when hired, $500 when completing the Criminal Justice Academy and $500 upon release from probation.

On Wednesday, June 10, 2019, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to a property destruction call at John G. Lancaster Park in Lexington Park.

The investigation determined that one or more culprits spray painted graffiti on the park’s restroom building and on signs.

Identity Needed for Theft Suspect

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the identity of the person pictured. On Monday, July 8, 2019, at 8:30 pm the suspect walked out of the St. Mary’s Fine Wine and Spirits liquor store in Great Mills with alcoholic beverages without paying for them. The next day, on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, the suspect returned and ran out of the store with a pack of cigarettes and another alcoholic beverage without paying for them. Shooting Investigation-UPDATE

UPDATE:  On July 12, 2019, with the assistance of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, Michael Timmy Harrod Jr., age 21 of Prince Frederick, was arrested and charged with the following crimes:

Attempted First Degree Murder
Firearm Use/Felony-Violent Crime
Loaded Handgun on Person
Handgun on Person
Handgun in Vehicle
Assault First Degree
Assault Second Degree

Harrod is currently incarcerated at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center on a no bond status. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office thanks the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in locating and apprehending Harrod.

Initial Press Release- On July 10, 2019, at approximately 2:20 a.m. deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Urgent Care located in Solomons for a reported shooting.  Preliminary investigation determined a male victim age 18, was traveling in a vehicle in the area of Route 4 and Lou’s Way in California, when an unknown vehicle pulled alongside the victim and began shooting. The victim was shot and sustained life-threatening injuries.  The victim was flown to an area trauma center and is in stable condition.

Animal Cruelty Investigation

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking public assistance with an ongoing animal cruelty investigation.  On July 14, 2019, Deputy First Class Roszell responded to the 40400 block of Parlett Morgan Road in Mechanicsville, for the reported animal cruelty.  Located in a wooded area were two deceased dogs. The dogs were determined to be Black Labrador Retrievers, both weighing over 80 pounds. The dogs had been decapitated and discarded in the wooded area.  Animal Control responded to the scene, and it was determined the dogs had been discarded within the last 48 hours.

Anyone with information on the possible owners of the dogs, or anyone with information on this case, is asked to contact DFC. Vice Narcotics Arrests

In July of 2019, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Vice Narcotics Division was conducting an investigation on William Joseph Leo Brown “Lee”, age 41 of Drayden, for the distribution of controlled dangerous substances.  With the assistance of the Vice Narcotics Support Team and St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office K-9,  a vehicle Brown was a passenger in was stopped in the area of Three Notch Road and Baptist Church Road in Mechanicsville. The operator of the vehicle was identified as Barbara Ann Ball, age 58 of Mechanicsville.

William Brown and Barbara Ball were found to be in possession of several capsules containing suspected heroin.  Brown was arrested and charged with CDS: Possession With Intent to Distribute and CDS: Possession-Not Marijuana.  Ball was arrested and charged with CDS: Possession-Not Marijuana. 

Additional charges are pending further review with State's Attorney Richard D. Fritz.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the whereabouts of Deshawn Anthony Carey, age 31 of Lexington Park.  Carey is 6’1” in height, weighs 217 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. Carey has the name “Anthony” tattooed on his neck and may no longer have a beard. Carey is currently wanted on the following charges:

Traffic Tip Tuesdays: Noise Limits

Sec. 21-1122. Noise limitations on use of sound amplification systems

Prohibited: When a motor vehicle is being operated on a highway, the driver of the vehicle may not operate or permit the operation of a sound amplification system from the vehicle that can be heard outside the vehicle from 50 or more feet.

A sound amplification system means a compact disc player, a radio, a tape player, or a similar device.

A violation is not considered a moving violation. The fine is $70.

Exempted vehicles are: Authorized emergency vehicles; vehicles operated by communications, electric, gas or water utilities; a sound amplification system operated to request assistance or to warn of a hazardous situation; or a sound amplification system used for advertising, parades or for political or other special events, unless otherwise prohibited by local law.

UPDATE:  The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is continuing the animal cruelty investigation. The Sheriff’s Office is requesting public assistance with information identifying the owners of the dogs. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Edward Vogt at (301) 475-4200 extension *8145 or by email at Edward.Vogt@stmarysmd.com. This is a very focused investigation and an update will be released later today.

Cpl. Harris Congratulated Upon Retirement

The Commissioners of St. Mary's County and members of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office congratulated Cpl. Douglas Harris on Tuesday for his retirement on July 1.
Harris began his career with the Sheriff's Office on June 11, 1999 as a Correctional Officer and became a Deputy Sheriff in 2006, reaching the rank of Corporal in 2013. Harris will be rejoining the Sheriff's Office later this summer as a civilian. Thank you for your years of service and dedication, Doug.

Animal Cruelty Update

3 p.m. UPDATE: July 16, 2019-   St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab Technicians transported both dogs to a local veterinarian hospital for an assessment and evaluation.  The dogs were determined to be male and ages are unknown at this time. The dogs are being transferred to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University where necropsies will be performed in attempt to gather additional investigative information. Updates will be provided as warranted.

Deputy Phillip Henry was awarded as Deputy of the Quarter as he has been a reliable asset to Patrol Squad 2B and to the agency as a whole during the first three months of the year. Deputy Henry is truly a team player, routinely contributing to high productivity levels on his squad.

Assault-  On July 12, 2019, DFC. Molitor responded to the the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, for the reported assault.  Investigation determined Serenity Faith Byrd, age 27 of Great Mills, and Desirae Belle Sullivan, age 28 of Chesapeake Beach, were involved in a mutual altercation in the facility.  Byrd and Sullivan were both charged with Assault 2nd Degree.  CASE# 40056-19

Disorderly Conduct-  On July 14, 2019, Dep. Graves responded to the 21600 block of Cinnamon Way in Lexington Park for the reported disturbance.  While on scene, Dionta Quantiaus Taylor, age 32 with no fixed address, was outside the residence yelling and causing a disturbance.  Taylor continued to yell, and disrupted nearby residents.  Taylor was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct.  CASE# 40272-19

Assault-  On July 14, 2019, Dep. T. Snyder responded to the 24500 block of Pin Cushion Road in Leonardtown, for the reported check the welfare of an individual screaming.  Located at the scene was Ashley Elizabeth Angle, age 23 of Leonardtown.  Investigation determined Angle had been in an argument with the victim, and assaulted the victim by striking the victim in the head and neck.  Angle was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree.  CASE# 40416-19

Theft-  On July 14, 2019, Dep. Graves located Jonathan Christian Steinbach, age 29 with no fixed address.  Steinbach was being sought, after he was identified in two previous thefts which occurred on July 8th and 9th at a business located on Great Mills Road. Steinbach previously left the establishment with alcohol and cigarettes which were not purchased.  Steinbach was arrested and charged with two counts of Theft.  CASE# 40277-19

Assault/Disorderly Conduct-  On July 15, 2019, Dep. Fenwick responded to the 21200 block of Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, for reported disturbance.  Investigation determined Heavenly Hattie Keemer, age 18 of Lexington Park, assaulted the victim by punching the victim, as well as punched the victim's vehicle.  Keemer then created a disturbance on scene, disturbing numerous customers of the business.  Keemer was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree and Disorderly Conduct.  CASE# 40554-19

Animal Cruelty Investigation-UPDATE

UPDATE: July 19, 2019- Necropsies were completed on both dogs at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and valuable investigative information was obtained. Results of the necropsies will not be released due to the sensitive nature of the information and adverse effects to the ongoing investigation. The remains of the dogs will be retained for return to the owner(s), if not complicit in the crime, or for a humane burial at a later date. At this time, the owner(s) of the dogs remain unidentified and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking public assistance with information on the identity of the owner(s). 3 p.m. UPDATE: July 16, 2019-   St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab Technicians transported both dogs to a local veterinarian hospital for an assessment and evaluation.  The dogs were determined to be male and ages are unknown at this time. The dogs are being transferred to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University where necropsies will be performed in attempt to gather additional investigative information. Updates will be provided as warranted.
UPDATE: July 16, 2019 The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is continuing the animal cruelty investigation. The Sheriff’s Office is requesting public assistance with information identifying the owner(s) of the dogs. This is a very focused investigation and an update will be released later today.

Initial Release: The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking public assistance with an ongoing animal cruelty investigation.  On July 14, 2019, Deputy First Class Roszell responded to the 40400 block of Parlett Morgan Road in Mechanicsville, for the reported animal cruelty.  Located in a wooded area were two deceased dogs. The dogs were determined to be Black Labrador Retrievers, both weighing over 80 pounds. The dogs had been decapitated and discarded in the wooded area.  Animal Control responded to the scene, and it was determined the dogs had been discarded within the last 48 hours.

Fatal Collision in Mechanicsville Under Investigation

On July 20, 2019, at 11:14 p.m. deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the reported motor vehicle collision in the 27400 block of Three Notch Road, in the area of Harpers Corner Road in Mechanicsville. Deputies arrived on scene and were advised by Marvin Leander Jones Jr., age 49 of Waldorf,  that he was driving on Three Notch Road when another vehicle collided with his vehicle, however he was unable to locate the other vehicle. Deputies began checking the area and observed motorcycle debris. Deputies quickly located an injured subject who was lying in  bushes, off the roadway.  The individual was later identified as Steven Marcus Gilmore, age 22 of Mechanicsville.  Lifesaving measures were attempted on scene however Gilmore ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and continued the investigation.

Preliminary investigation determined Jones was traveling southbound on Three Notch Road operating a 2013 Dodge Durango. Gilmore was also traveling southbound on Three Notch Road operating a 2018 Suzuki GSX motorcycle. For unknown reasons Gilmore ran into the back of the Durango, causing Gilmore’s motorcycle to leave the roadway, strike a curb, and Gilmore being ejected from the motorcycle.

Traffic Tip Tuesdays: Following Too Closely

Sec. 21-310.

“The driver of a motor vehicle may not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of the other vehicle and of the traffic on and the condition of the highway.”

Funeral processions are exempted.

State law continues, “As to how closely one automobile should follow another depends upon the circumstances of each case, namely, the speed of such vehicles, the amount of traffic, and the condition of the highway. The driver should act reasonably and prudently, taking these factors into consideration.”

The fine for a driver of a motor vehicle following another vehicle closer than reasonable and prudent is $110 and two points assessed on a driver’s license. If contributing to an accident, the fine is $150 and three points on a license.

Burglary Arrest in Mechanicsville

On July 23, 2019, at approximately 1:52 p.m. deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 40700 block of Old Horse Landing Road in Mechanicsville, for the reported burglary in progress.  Deputies arrived and discovered an individual later identified as James Daniel Seifert, age 26 of Lexington Park, on the porch of the victim’s residence. Investigation determined Seifert damaged doors trying to access the residence, and ultimately broke a window and entered the victim’s residence. Once inside, Seifert removed several of the victim’s firearms and a water jug containing loose change. Seifert was arrested and charged with the following:

Burglary First Degree
Burglary Fourth Degree
Theft
Malicious Destruction of Property

Seifert is currently incarcerated at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center awaiting a bond review.
