On January 3, 2019, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Vice Narcotics Unit, along with the COPS Unit and Sheriff’s Office K-9, conducted a vehicle stop in the 20700 block of Pt. Lookout Road in Callaway, in reference to an ongoing investigation. The operator of the vehicle was identified as Javonta Christopher King, age 24 of Lexington Park, and the front seat passenger was identified as Kentwuan Lionel Wills, age 21, with no fixed address. Also in the vehicle was an infant child. Sheriff’s Office K-9 positively alerted on the vehicle during a scan, and subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a digital scale with white powdery residue, and a plastic bag containing suspected cocaine was located in the vehicle. Wills was found to have an active warrant for his arrest for the charge of Driving While Suspended.  Located in Wills’ pants was a folded lottery ticket which contained a powdery residue: suspected Ecstasy.

Wills was arrested and charged with two counts of CDS Possession- Not Marijuana and CDS Possession-Paraphernalia. Once at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, three baggies of suspected cocaine were located hidden in Wills’ underwear.  Wills was also charged with Possession of Contraband in a Place of Confinement, and served the outstanding warrant for Driving While Suspended.  King was arrested and charged with CDS Possession-Not Marijuana.

Additional charges are pending review with the St. Mary’s County States Attorney’s Office.

Major Michael Merican, Corrections Major Deborah Diedrich, Assistant Warden Mary Ann Thompson and Sheriff Tim Cameron

Mary Ann Thompson, a longtime employee of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, has been promoted to Assistant Warden of the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.

Thompson, formerly the Support Services Manager of the detention center, was promoted on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019.

“Congratulations,” Sheriff Tim Cameron told Thompson on Friday when the news was announced. “It’s well deserved. I’m excited for you,” he said.

Thompson began with the Corrections Division of the St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Office in November 1989. Most recently serving as the Support Services Manager for the detention center, Thompson provided professional guidance and direction in planning, leadership and management of the 230-bed facility ensuring the custody, security and the welfare of inmates in compliance with local, state and federal laws.

As the Assistant Warden, those duties will continue and expand, responsible for program management of the inmate population and effective and efficient operation of the jail.

Thompson said of the promotion, “Without a doubt, the Corrections profession is quite challenging. However, it is also very gratifying. Truly no two days are the same. But, there is no greater reward than knowing a positive difference is being made in the lives of those who are incarcerated and most importantly, their families and their children.”

“I look forward to continuing to work with Sheriff Tim Cameron, Major Mike Merican, Assistant Sheriff, and Corrections Major Deb Diedrich, Warden, and the dedicated Correctional Officers, civilians, contractual staff and volunteers of the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center to improve our community,” Thompson said.

“Mary Ann’s dedication to the Sheriff’s Office is beyond reproach,” Sheriff Cameron said. “Along with Major Diedrich, we are extremely fortunate to continue to have Thompson’s level of expertise and experience in the Corrections Division. Those incarcerated at the detention center aren’t just inmates; they are members of the St. Mary’s County community who will be returning to the community. Inmates aren’t just warehoused at our jail. There are multiple programs available there to improve their lives through continuing education or addiction treatment.”

Adhering to the law will make roadways in St. Mary’s County and in Maryland safer for drivers, passengers, bicyclists, horse-and-buggy operators and pedestrians.

#TrafficTipTuesdays

Stopping for school buses:

Sec. 21-706. “If a school vehicle has stopped on a roadway and is operating the alternately flashing red lights … the driver of any other vehicle meeting or overtaking the school vehicle shall stop at least 20 feet from the rear of the school vehicle, if approaching the school vehicle from its rear, or at least 20 feet from the front of the school vehicle, if approaching the school vehicle from its front.”

When vehicles may proceed: “The driver of any other vehicle meeting or overtaking the school vehicle may not proceed until the school vehicle resumes motion or the alternately flashing red lights are deactivated.”

Drivers who run past a stopped school bus with its stop sign activated face a fine of $570 or three points on a driver’s license.
