The County Attorney’s Office for St. Mary’s County and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office announce the successful civil prosecution to have the property located at 24550 Horse Shoe Road in Clements declared a Nuisance. A Nuisance means a property that is used by persons for the specific purpose of illegally administering a controlled dangerous substance; for the illegal distribution of a controlled dangerous substance or controlled paraphernalia; or for the illegal storage or concealment of a controlled dangerous substance or controlled paraphernalia.  On Nov. 14, 2018, several officers testified in the District Court for St. Mary’s County as to the long history of the property being used by persons to sell and use illegal drugs.

The Honorable John Slade III declared the property a Nuisance and ordered several individuals who have previously used and sold illegal drugs from the property to permanently vacate the property. In addition, the property’s owners, Juanita Chase, Francis Price and Carol Price, have been ordered to submit to the court within 30 days a plan of correction to ensure the property will not again be used for a Nuisance. Failure to comply with the court order could result in proceedings for contempt or other relief, including having the property sold under appropriate circumstances.

Sheriff Tim Cameron and Acting County Attorney David A. Weiskopf praised Sheriff Deputies for their work in researching and investigating the case. Weiskopf also thanked Assistant County Attorney James L. Tanavage who brought the civil action to declare the property a Nuisance.

The staff of the St. Mary's County Government Office of Finance gave the six dogs of the Sheriff's Office Canine Unit badges and treats on Tuesday.

Using their own money, members of the Finance Office annually make a holiday gift to the community and this year, Vicki Goss, Fiscal Specialist IV, came up with the idea to buy badges for the Sheriff's Office's K-9s.

Sgt. Todd Fleenor, Canine Unit Supervisor, said the working dogs of the agency haven't had badges in more than 14 years. "This is a remarkable experience. It's awesome," he told members of the Finance Office.

"It means so much to all of us," Sgt. Fleenor said. "The K-9s are deputies just like us."

"We'll be the first ones in the Tri-County area" to have badges on police dogs, he said.

"It means so much to us to have this kind of recognition," Capt. Steven Hall, Special Operations Commander, said.

Members of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Canine Unit are Sgt. Fleenor, who handles Largo; Cpl. William Rishel, who handles Skar and Filly; Cpl. Jason Graves, who handles Hakan and Jasmine; and DFC Lacey Smith, who handles Brix.

On December 13, 2018, two area businesses, and one local fire department reported they had received bomb threats.  The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded and checked the buildings, and no devices were located.  At this time, the bomb threats which were received via email, appear to be part of a national trend to extort money from businesses and are not considered credible threats. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office encourages the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activity.
