On Wednesday, April 12, Corporal Angela M. Delozier received the prestigious Sam Walker Lifetime Achievement Award at the Maryland State D.A.R.E. conference and in-service training in Ocean City.

A 13-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, Delozier has been a D.A.R.E. instructor for the last decade and teaches new D.A.R.E. instructors in Maryland and Virginia. She has also coordinated the Camp D.A.R.E. program in St. Mary’s County since 2009 and is responsible for all of the deliverables of the program: overseeing finances, organizing special guests, securing sponsors, processing applications and creating the itinerary for the program while managing junior and senior leaders.

Three schools are assigned to Delozier: Leonardtown High School, James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center and the Fairlead Academy. She addresses priorities at the three schools while working in harmony with the schools’ administrators, ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for students. She also monitors social media sites where she has received valuable information that she has used to intervene proactively in conflicts and disruptive criminal activity.

Delozier is not only praised for her excellent working relationship with the school staff but with the student body as well.

In her daily activities, Delozier is dependable, reliable, and charismatic. She is often asked to represent the agency at speaking engagements throughout St. Mary’s County. She has been described as a team player, never hesitant to assist with operations at other schools or with investigations involving the students.

“Corporal Delozier is a pleasure to work with, and the dedication she displays to her division, agency, and citizens is commendable,” said Captain Steven Hall, Special Operations Division Commander. “She takes great pride in her position as a School Resource Officer, and that is evident by her compassion for her students and desire to promote a positive image of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.”

Sergeant Michael Gray commented, “In addition to her roles as the School Resource Officer and Camp D.A.R.E. coordinator, Delozier continues to spearhead several complex assignments including National Night Out. All of her projects are successful and continue to grow and become better each year.”

The Sam Walker Award is given to an officer nominated by his or her agency. Each nominated candidate has demonstrated a high degree of commitment to the D.A.R.E. program in the candidate’s school, community and state. The four to five nominations across the state that are received annually are reviewed by a panel consisting of former recipients of the award before a final selection is made.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Warns Residents of Increased Theft from Unlocked Motor Vehicles

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office has identified a trend of increased thefts from unlockedmotor vehicles. In these crimes, suspects prey on citizens who fail to secure their vehicles, stealing what they can from their victims. Valuables left in plain view leaves citizens vulnerable to becoming targets of crime. Fortunately, these crimes are usually crimes of opportunity and thus are largely preventable.

These criminals are looking for purses, cash, change, laptops, electronic tablets, and GPS units.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to practice these important prevention techniques:

Lock vehiclesevery time you exit them
Remove all valuable items
Park in well-lit areas
Do not leave a motor vehicle running and unattended

In addition to securing their vehicles, it is important that residents remain aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity, such as unknown persons and/or vehicles in the area, by calling the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 301-475-8008. For immediate assistance, call 9-1-1.

Being proactive and reporting suspicious incidents is the key to preventing crime throughout our neighborhoods.

A neat connection:

Correctional Officer Edelen has been with the #SMCSO for three years. While at Chopticon High School, she actively participated in the Best Buddies Program where she was paired with Arielle Gray.

Edelen said, "We clicked immediately and became best friends." Even though she has graduated and is now pursuing her career, she makes it a point to attend the Special Olympics to show her support for Arielle.

Hogan Administration Launches “Before It’s Too Late” Web Portal to Provide Resources, Raise Awareness of Opioid Crisis

ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Hogan-Rutherford administration launched “Before It’s Too Late,” a new web portal designed to provide resources and raise public awareness of the rapid escalation of the evolving heroin, opioid, and fentanyl crisis in Maryland.

“For nearly three years, our administration has been focused on combating the heroin and opioid crisis from every angle, including prevention, treatment, and recovery," said Governor Larry Hogan. "This new web portal is another tool to raise awareness and provide critical resources to all Marylanders so that we can save thousands of lives before it’s too late.”

The new website, BeforeItsTooLateMD.org, is a one-stop shop for individuals, families, educators, and health care professionals to get the educational resources they need to prevent this epidemic from spreading—because education goes hand-in-hand with prevention. This public awareness effort also includes a social media presence on Facebook and Twitter.

“Education and public awareness go hand-in-hand with prevention, and are an essential component of our efforts to turn the tide in this heroin and opioid crisis,” said Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford. "The Before It's Too Late portal will provide addicts, family members, educators, and health professionals with the resources they need to get help, understand the disease of addiction, and reduce stigma, in order to save lives."

The “Before It’s Too Late” tagline is derived from a PSA the governor released featuring actor Michael Kelly in March. The launch follows the Regional Opioid and Substance Abuse Summit, which featured Governor Hogan, District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser, and Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe as speakers, and the first-ever Maryland Heroin and Opioid Educational Forum for students at Westminster High School in Carroll County, hosted by Lt. Governor Rutherford.

In March, Governor Hogan declared a State of Emergency in response to the heroin, opioid, and fentanyl crisis ravaging communities in Maryland and across the country. This declaration
activated the governor’s emergency management authority and enables increased and more rapid coordination between the state and local jurisdictions. The governor also announced $50 million in new funding to address the crisis, as well as the appointment of the governor’s senior emergency management advisor Clay Stamp to lead the Opioid Operational Command Center, which is mobilizing all available resources for effective prevention, treatment, and recovery.

The new website, BeforeItsTooLateMD.org, can be accessed through the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office website at www.firstsheriff.com.
