03/08/17 – Assault 2^nd Degree – Deputy S. Shelko responded to the 41000 block of Jesse Drive in Mechanicsville, MD for a reported disturbance. Upon arrival, Deputy S. Shelko met with the victim who advised he and the suspect, Nicole Elizabeth Pires, 44 of Mechanicsville, were involved in an argument that turned physical. During the argument, the suspect who was found to be intoxicated allegedly scratched the victim’s neck with her fingernails. Pires was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where she was charged with Assault 2^nd Degree. Case #13133-17

Goodwin, William Joseph

03/09/17 – Trespassing – Deputy T. Snyder responded to the Lexington Park Methodist Church in reference to the suspect William Joseph Goodwin, 50 of Lexington Park, on the property after being issued a “No Trespass Notice” by Deputy Snyder on March 8, 2017. Goodwin was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he was charged with Trespassing on Private Property. Case #13330-17

03/09/17 – Affray/Disorderly Conduct/Possession of CDS: Not Marijuana – Deputy First Class V. Pontorno and Corporal J. Graves were in the area of 21000 Great Mills Road in Lexington Park when they heard yelling coming from the parking lot in front of the Quick Stop. Deputies observed the two suspects, James Brian Thompson, age 21, of Lexington Park and suspect John Eugene Otto, age 21, of Lexington Park, on the ground fighting. The fight and yelling caused patrons from inside of the Quick Stop to exit the business to watch the altercation. Corporal Graves pulled suspect John Otto off of suspect James Thompson, who in turn attempted to flee the scene. After a brief foot pursuit, Deputy First Class Pontorno apprehended Thompson. A search incident to arrest of Thompson revealed suspected marijuana residue, a grinder and suspected Alprazolam pills in suspect Thompson’s possession. The suspects, Otto and Thompson, were arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. Thompson was charged with Affray/Disorderly Conduct/Possession of CDS: Not Marijuana. Otto was charged with Affray and Disorderly Conduct. CCN #13378-17

03/10/17 – Violation of Protective Order – Corporal J. Stone responded to the 20000 block of Shadrick Street in Leonardtown, MD, for a reported disturbance. Cpl. Stone's investigation revealed the suspect, Nicole Corine Underwood, age 26 of Leonardtown, entered the victim’s home in violation of a final protective order issued by District Court Judge, Karen Chesser on January 24, 2017. Underwood was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where she was charged with Violation of Protective Order. CCN #13141-17

Hill, Francis Xavier

03/10/17 – Violation of Protective Order – Deputy G. Muschette observed the suspect Francis Xavier Hill, age 21, of no fixed address, in the 21000 block of Great Mills Road in Lexington Park. Deputy Muschette confirmed Hill had three open arrest warrants for Violation of Protective order and Burglary 4^th Degree. Deputy Muschette made contact with the suspect at an apartment on Great Mills Road and placed him under arrest for the warrants. It was subsequently learned that the suspect was actively in violation of a protective order, which protected an occupant within the residence from contact with the suspect. Hill was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, where he was charged with Violation of Protective Order and served three outstanding warrants. CCN# 13468-17/5794-17/7559-17

Raley, Justin David

03/10/17 – Burglary 4^th Degree – Deputy J. Bare responded to a vacant residence in the 19000 block of Tippett Road in Lexington Park in an attempt to locate wanted suspect, Justin David Raley, 29 of Lexington Park. Suspect Raley was wanted on six open warrants for Burglary 1^st and 2^nd Degree, Rogue and Vagabond, and Theft: Less $1000. Upon arrival, deputies searched the vacant residence locating suspect Raley inside the home. Deputies contacted the homeowners of the residence, who advised they had not given the suspect permission to be in the residence. Raley was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he was charged with Burglary 4^th Degree and served all outstanding warrants. Sullivan, Kenneth Wayne

03/11/17 – Assault 2^nd Degree – Deputy First Class D. Potter responded to a residence in the 46000 block of Sell Drive in Lexington Park for a reported disturbance. Upon arrival, one of the witnesses claimed to have been locked out of the residence by the victim and needed police assistance. Suspect Kenneth Wayne Sullivan, 55 of Lexington Park, MD, intervened by taking ahold of the victim by the arms and moved the victim away from the door so the witness could enter. Deputy First Class Potter determined there was no crime and left the residence. The Sheriff’s Office received another call for a reported active disturbance within the residence. Upon arrival, it was reported that the verbal altercation continued and escalated when suspect Sullivan threw a piece of hot pizza at the victim, striking the victim in the face. Due to the visible signs of injury to the victim, and obvious continuing course of conduct in the household, Sullivan was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, where he was charged with Assault 2^nd Degree. Brown, Alehandro Jerry

03/13/17 – CDS Possession: Not Marijuana – Corporal. J. Stone responded to the area of Chancellors Run Apartments in Great Mills for a reported Domestic Assault. Upon arriving, Cpl. Stone observed a vehicle leaving the scene at which time he attempted to stop the vehicle to ensure the occupants were not related to the domestic assault report. However, the vehicle refused to stop attempting to elude Cpl. Stone. The vehicle subsequently stopped and Corporal Stone detained all occupants, making contact with the driver, suspect Alehandro Jerry Brown, 44 of Great Mills, MD. Corporal Stone observed the suspect to have suspected white powder cocaine residue on the front of his black jacket and on the crotch of his jeans. Sitting in the suspect's lap in plain view was a torn plastic baggie with suspected powder cocaine residue, as well. Additionally, the investigation revealed the suspect did not possess a valid Maryland license and his license and privilege through the state of Georgia were suspended. Brown was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, where he was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance of Schedule II, to wit cocaine. CCN #14154-17

03/13/17 – Theft Less Than $1,000 – Deputy First Class A. Schultz responded to Walmart in California, MD for the report of a shoplifter in custody. The investigation revealed that suspect Angela Lois Dias, 51 of California, MD was observed by Walmart loss prevention at a self-checkout register scanning only some of the items she had for purchase. The suspect then walked past all points of sale and began to exit the store when she was confronted by loss prevention. The suspect further emptied her purse of additional stolen items. Dias was served a “Notice Not to Trespass” for Walmart and charged via Criminal Citation for Theft less than $1,000. CCN # 14115-17

Heroes and Hoops: Local Law Enforcement Joins the Mother Catherine Academy in the Local Heroes Project

While on duty, they deal with violent offenders in the jail, they arrest criminals, they investigate accidents, and they are always there when the public makes a call for help. However, they also do more than that; they invest in the community they serve.

On Sunday, March 19, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO) deputies and correctional officers volunteered to play basketball against students at Mother Catherine Academy (MCA) for the Local Heroes Project, a project started by MCA administrators to teach students the virtue of charity.

The Mother Catherine gymnasium quickly filled up with spectators waiting to see the MCA girls basketball team play the SMCSO team led by their coach Lt. Robert Russell. The sheriff’s office quickly learned this was going to be a close match. As the students and sheriff’s office team members dribbled from one end of the court to the other, the excited crowd cheered on their favorite team, gasped when a foul was called and cheered when their team scored.

“There was so much positive energy in the room that day you couldn’t help but get excited during the game,” said Correctional Officer Sgt. Bonnie Payne. “It was a rewarding experience for me especially because my grandchildren attend the school. It was a way for me to serve my community while spending time with my family.”

Initially, the SMCSO team led the scoreboard until an interesting twist was announced: for every $1 donated, the Mother Catherine team would get five points on the scoreboard, and the sheriff’s office would receive one point.

During the halftime show, the MCA cheerleaders strategically pulled the law enforcement officers to the middle of the court where they had them participate in a formation with signs that said, “Support our Local Heroes” held up behind them.

All the funds raised from the event were donated to the family of “Sgt. Nolan Scully,” who recently lost his battle with cancer.

“When I found out the funds raised for the event would be given to the Nolan Scully family,” Sgt. Sarah Lacey said, “I immediately volunteered to play. I live here in St. Mary’s County, this community is a family. We help each other anyway we can.”

Following the first basketball game, the MCA boys basketball team played the Maryland State Police (MSP) team, and then the MSP team and the sheriff’s office played each other in a seven-minute game.

The event ended on a warm note when the MCA students surprised law enforcement officers and the Scully family with a thin blue line flag that was folded while “There are Angels Among Us” by Alan Jackson played in the background. After the students had folded the flag, they presented it to the Scully family. A video of the sheriff’s office deputies and the MSP troopers showed scenes of community outreach.

It was an excellent day for the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, the Maryland State Police, and the Mother Catherine Academy. They played against each other for a win, but at the end of the day, everyone was on the same team playing in unity in support of the Nolan Scully family. That day everyone – including the spectators – was a hero.

Afterward, the students presented the law enforcement agencies with a basketball signed by them and tobacco stick signs with each deputy’s and state trooper’s name.

The SMCSO thanks MCA for coordinating and inviting correctional officers and deputies to play in this event. They also thank the fans for their support and the MSP for displaying great sportsmanship.

Vice/Narcotics Arrests

In November of 2015, Thomas Austin Goldring III, aka “Junk,” age 37, of Lexington Park, was indicted by a grand jury for distribution of crack cocaine. Goldring failed to appear in the Circuit Court for St. Mary’s County reference these charges in February 2017, resulting in two active warrants for his arrest.

On March 22, 2017, detectives from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Vice/Narcotics Division observed Goldring as a passenger in a vehicle stopped in the 21000 block of Castaway Circle in Lexington Park. Detectives approached the vehicle and identified themselves as police with badges clearly visible. Goldring immediately instructed the vehicle’s operator, later identified as Stanley Albert Gange, age 67, of Upper Marlboro, to flee the area in an attempt to elude detectives. The vehicle began accelerating towards a detective, who had to take immediate action to avoid being struck. To stop the vehicle, deputies had to break into the front side of the driver’s side window.

Gange and Goldring were placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. Through their investigation, detectives also discovered Goldring attempted to hide approximately 20.9 grams (street value of $2,091) of suspected crack cocaine on the rear passenger side floorboard and beneath the rear passenger seat of the marked police cruiser. The in-car camera in the police cruiser captured Goldring moving around in an attempt to hide the drugs.

Detectives also recovered over $2,000.00 in U.S. currency on Goldring during a search and a plastic bag containing approximately 6.2 grams (street value of $30) of suspected marijuana from inside the suspect’s vehicle.

Goldring was served the two warrants and charged with one count each of attempted First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault, and CDS possession; not marijuana (crack cocaine).

Gagne was charged with one count of Attempted First Degree Assault and Second Degree Assault.

Additional charges are pending a review with State’s Attorney Richard D. Fritz.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

On March 25, 2017, at approximately 2:18 am, patrol units from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to a serious motor vehicle collision on Loveville Road in the area of Lenny Penny Lane in Loveville, Maryland. Deputies located a 1999 Ford F-350 pickup truck in the roadway. The operator, Franklin Irvin Bowles, age 27 of Loveville, was pronounced deceased by EMS personnel.

The St. Mary’s County Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and continued the investigation. The initial investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling northbound on Loveville Road when for unknown reasons the vehicle crossed the centerline and left the roadway. Upon leaving the roadway, the vehicle struck a tree and fence.

At this time, speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Suspicious Item in Neighborhood

On March 24, 2017, at approximately 5:10 p.m., St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Garrett Trailer Park on Great Mills Road for what was believed to be an unexploded ordinance.

The investigation revealed a subject was oystering near the Patuxent River Naval Air Station when they dredged the ordinance out of the river and then transported it to a friend’s residence located in the Garrett Trailer Park. The ordinance displayed visible markings which read “Contact Military or Police” and “Contains Hazardous Materials.”

For precautionary measures, residents were evacuated out of the neighborhood and at a nearby business while deputies made contact with the proper authorities at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. The authorities identified the item as an underwater marker/buoy and advised the item posed no threat. Deputies maintained the scene until personnel responded and reclaimed the buoy.

Residents returned to their homes and emergency services personnel cleared the scene.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office thanks the residents of the Garrett Trailer Park for their patience and cooperation.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Welcomes New K-9

Sheriff Tim Cameron announces a new member to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office family: a 15-month-old Dutch Shepherd, Brix, which has been assigned to work with Deputy First Class Lacey Johnson. Brix was imported from Slovakia.

Johnson and Brix are in a 16-week basic K-9 handler course that started in February. After the completion of the course, Johnson and Brix will become certified in Patrol and Narcotics Detection.

“The K-9 Unit is an integral part of the agency, helping patrol deputies on the streets: detecting explosives and narcotics, searching for missing persons and apprehending fleeing criminals,” said Sheriff Cameron. “The teams are a valuable law enforcement tool that saves lives and helps to improve the overall efficiency of our agency.”

Johnson has been employed with the sheriff’s office since 2013 and was previously assigned to the Patrol Division.

“The decision to become a member of the K-9 unit is not one that should be taken lightly,” said Captain Steve Hall. “It is a commitment that comes with responsibility, both on and off duty. It has been a real pleasure to watch Lacey to work so diligently and reach her goal of becoming a K-9 handler.”

With the new team in place, the sheriff’s office now fields five K-9 teams who train weekly to maintain their craft. The K-9 Unit is led by International Police Work Dog Association (I.P.W.D.A) Master Trainer Sgt. Todd Fleenor. The K-9 teams are certified in Patrol and Narcotics Detection and are used to conduct building searches, to assist with evidence recovery, to track suspects, to detect narcotics and to apprehend violent offenders. The unit also has two single-purpose canines trained in explosive detection.

All teams are required to certify annually through I.P.W.D.A.

3/18/17 - Assault 2^nd Degree - Deputy Ball responded to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center for a reported assault between inmates. The investigation revealed the suspect David Eric Strain, 30 of Edenton, NC., entered the victim’s cell to confront him over earlier lude comments. The confrontation turned physical and the victim alleged the suspect hit the victim multiple times in his upper body and head. Strain was charged with Assault 2^nd Degree and remained in the custody of the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. CCN #15106-17

Clontz, Melinda Danele

3/17/17 - Assault 2^nd Degree - Corporal P. Handy responded to the 27000 block of Danville St., in Mechanicsville, MD., for an alleged assault. The investigation revealed the victim and suspect, Melinda Danele Clontz, 48 of Mechanicsville, MD., were both under the influence of alcoholic beverages and advised they had been arguing most of the night. The victim advised the argument turned physical when the suspect threw a television remote control at the victim, striking him in the head. The victim suffered a small cut to his forehead consistent with his recount of the incident. The suspect was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where she was charged with Assault 2^nd Degree. CCN #14886-17

Strain, Sidney Antwan

3-19-17 – Reckless Endangerment - Deputy S. Bowie and Sergeant R. Merritt responded to the area of North Essex Rd., and Ranger Rd., in Lexington Park, MD., for the report of a weapons violation. The Emergency Communications Center received several calls alerting responding deputies that the suspect, later identified as Sidney Antwan Strain, 28 of Lexington Park, MD., was operating a motor vehicle when he produced a gun and fired it into the air. Deputy Bowie located the motor vehicle, registered to the suspect, parked within the immediate area but unoccupied. Within the vehicle, in plain view, deputies observed a gun on the floorboard. The suspect was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he was charged with one count of Reckless Endangerment. CCN # 15277-17

Kuttner, William Spencer

03/19/17 – Theft Less $100 – Deputy B. Fennessey initiated a traffic stop in the area of Three Notch Rd., and Old Flora Corner Rd., for an equipment violation on a motor vehicle displaying Alabama registration plates. Deputy Fennessey made contact with the driver, William Spencer Kuttner, 52 of Phoenix City, AL. A registration and a wanted check revealed the tags were reported stolen through Phoenix City Police Department in Alabama. The suspect was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he was charged with Theft Less $100. CCN #15180

Upon arrival, he met with the suspect, Christie Elizabeth Smallwood, 27 of Clinton, MD, who advised she had received a letter indicating there was an outstanding arrest warrant under her name. The investigation revealed the suspect had provided a fictitious name and date of birth to law enforcement during a theft investigation. Deputy Ball arrested the suspect and transported her to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where she was charged for False Statement to a Peace Officer and served the open warrant for Failing to Appear in District Court. 03/25/17– Violation of Peace Order - Deputy D. Sidorowicz responded to the 45000 block of Wrong Way Lane in California, MD for an alleged violation of a Peace Order. The investigation revealed suspect Kimberley Bernice Bowles, 43 of California, MD, violated an active peace order by contacting the victim in person and making unwanted statements to him. 03/25/17 - Theft of Motor Vehicle – Deputies responded to the area of Budds Creek Road and Long Rd., Mechanicsville, MD, for numerous traffic complaints of motorcycles operating in a reckless and dangerous manner. Corporal J. Yingling located the motorcycles at a residence in the 24000 block of Long Rd. A check of the motorcycles VIN numbers confirmed they were stolen. The 2008 Suzuki dirt bike was reported stolen through the LaPlata Police Department, and the 2009 Yamaha Motorcycle was reported stolen through Prince George’s County Police Department. The Investigation revealed the operators as suspect Derron Michael Chesley, 25 of Colton’s Point, MD and John Joseph Eberwein, 22 of Avenue, MD. Both suspects were located and arrested. The suspects were transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and charged with Theft of Motor Vehicle. CCN # 16453-17

03/26/17– Violation of Peace Order – Deputy Siciliano responded to 22000 block of Valley Estates Dr., Lexington Park, MD for the report of a violation of a peace order. Upon arrival, the victim provided evidence that the suspect, Tiarra Lashelle Brooks, 32 of Lexington Park, MD, had repeatedly contacted the victim through Facebook. The victim further advised she has an active Peace Order issued by District Court prohibiting the suspect from harassing or contacting her. Deputy Siciliano located and arrested the suspect. She was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where the suspect was charged with two counts of Failing to comply with a Peace Order. CCN #16535-17

03/26/17– Assault 2^nd Degree – Deputies responded to the 20000 block of Primrose Ct., Lexington Park, MD for a reported Domestic Assault. Deputy C. Edwards met with the victim who advised she and the suspect, Jonathan Albert Anderson, 26 of Lexington Park, MD, were involved in a verbal argument that turned physical when the suspect struck the victim on the right side of her head and face, leaving visible signs of injury. The suspect had fled the scene prior to deputies arrival. Anderson was apprehended a short distance away and arrested. The suspect was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and charged with Assault 2^nd Degree. CCN #16532-17

03/26/17– Violation of Peace Order – Deputy J. Bush responded to Lancaster Park in Lexington Park, MD, for a reported harassment. The investigation revealed the suspect, Mark Eugene Johnson, 57 of Lexington Park, MD, began recording and following the victim in the park causing the victim alarm. Deputy Bush determined the suspect was in violation of an active Peace Order protecting the victim from contact and harassment by the suspect. The suspect was located in the immediate area and arrested. The suspect was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he was charged with Violation of a Peace Order. CCN #16562-17

03/26/17– CDS Violation – Corporal J. Stone was conducting a premise check in the area of the Clements softball field and parking lot when he observed a motor vehicle with the driver slouched down into the driver side seat. Cpl. Stone made contact with the driver who was identified as Davevon Lee Price 24, of Colton’s Point, MD. Upon contact with the suspect, Cpl. Stone detected what appeared to be the smell of burnt marijuana exiting the suspect's vehicle. An incident search revealed the suspect was found to be in possession of more than 10 grams of Marijuana. Price was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and charged with CDS: Possession of Marijuana over 10 grams. CCN #16608-17

03/27/17- CDS Violation - Cpl. J. Stone responded to the 40000 block of King Drive, Mechanicsville, MD, for a reported noise complaint coming from a vehicle parked on the roadway in the community. Witnesses identified the driver as Romaine Antonio Bailey 26, of Mechanicsville, MD. Cpl. Stone located the vehicle and suspect who was subsequently found to be in the possession of Cocaine and related CDS paraphernalia. The suspect was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he was charged with Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance – Not Marijuana and CDS – Possession Paraphernalia. 03/27/17– Burglary: 4^th Degree – Deputies responded to a residence in the 21000 block of Elegant Ct., Lexington Park, MD, for the report of a subject exiting the vacant residence. Upon arrival, deputies met with an agent who advised he had contact with a subject exiting the residence owned by the company and that no one is authorized to be staying inside of the residence. The suspect was located by Deputy R. Steinbach in the 21000 block of Great Mills Rd, Great Mills, MD. Deputy Steinbach identified the suspect as Curtis William Richardson, 23 of California, MD, who was believed to be sleeping inside of the vacant residence without permission. On March 17, 2017, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to International Beverage (Cadillac Jacks) in Lexington Park for a burglary. The investigation revealed two subjects attempted to break through the front door but were unsuccessful. The suspects returned a second time, forced entry into the business, and stole property.

The Criminal Investigations Division continued the investigation. Criminal Investigations Detectives and deputies in the patrol unit worked together to identify the suspects as Terrell Devantee Atkins, age 18, of Lexington Park and Marquet Darrell Thompson, age 18, of No Fixed Address.

On March 22, 2017, Atkins was located and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he was charged with theft and burglary charges.

An arrest warrant was issued for suspect Marquet Thompson on March 21, 2017. He was arrested on March 22, 2017, and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he was charged with theft, burglary and malicious destruction of property.

03/21/17–Assault 2^nd Degree – Corporal D. Reppel responded to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center in Leonardtown, MD for the report of an assault. The investigation revealed the suspect, Jarrell Rahiem Johnson, 29 of California, MD, initiated an unprovoked physical attack against the victim, by striking the victim several times in the arms and chest area with his fist. The suspect was arrested and charged with Assault 2^nd Degree and remained in the custody of the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. CCN #15607-17

03/22/17– Possession of CDS not Marijuana – Deputy First Class D. Potter conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle that was traveling on Chancellors Run Road in Great Mills, MD. During the traffic stop, Corporal B. Rishel and his K-9 partner conducted an exterior scan of the vehicle, when the K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics. A search of the vehicle revealed the operator, Charles Lewis Guy, 53 of Lexington Park, MD, to be in possession of suspected cocaine. Suspect Guy was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, where he was charged with Possession of CDS not marijuana. CCN #15713-17

Benton, Shenandoah Dornell

03/22/17– Assault 1^st Degree and CDS Possession not Marijuana – Deputy J. Bare responded to the Take It Easy Ranch in Callaway, MD for a reported domestic assault. Deputy Bare made contact with the victim who indicated the suspect, Shenandoah Dornell Benton, 40 of Callaway, MD started an unprovoked verbal fight with him. The argument escalated when the suspect punched the victim in the head and chest area then attempted to choke the victim. The victim was able to secure himself in another room within the residence, when the suspect retrieved a knife from the kitchen and repeatedly stated she was going to kill the victim, while trying to gain entry through the locked door. Deputy Bare observed injuries to the victim consistent with his account of the events. The suspect was placed under arrest and prior to transport asked for her purse to accompany her to the detention center. A search of the suspect’s purse pocketbook revealed Lyrica pills, which the suspect could not produce a prescription for and is a controlled dangerous substance. The CDS was seized and the suspect was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where she was charged with Assault 1^st Degree and CDS Possession not Marijuana.

False Fire Alarm – Deputies responded to Leonardtown High School for a false fire alarm activation. The investigation revealed a student was running laps during gym, ran their hand along the wall, and accidently triggered the alarm. The Fire Marshal’s Office responded and deemed the incident accidental.

3/28/2017

Stolen Vehicle – Unknown suspect(s) stole a motor vehicle from the apartments of Wildewood in California. Corporal D. Corcoran is investigating the case.

Theft – Unknown suspect(s) entered a motor vehicle and stole property in the 21000 block of Cambridge Drive in Lexington Park. Cpl. J. Vezzosi is continuing the investigation. CASE# 16821-17

Assault – A nine-year-old was scratched with scissors by another student at Evergreen Elementary School in California. The case remains open for further investigation by Cpl. T. Seyfried. CASE# 16778-17

St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Serious Motor Vehicle Collision

On March 30, 2017, at approximately noon, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of a serious motor vehicle collision on Patuxent Beach Road near South Patuxent Beach Road. Officers arrived on scene and discovered a dump truck that appeared to be engulfed in flames.

The preliminary investigation reveals a passenger vehicle traveling on Southbound Route 4 struck a dump truck transporting asphalt head on causing both vehicles to leave the roadway. The dump truck overturned with the passenger vehicle underneath the dump truck into a ditch.

At this time, one fatality is confirmed and deputies are working to notify the next of kin.

The accident reconstruction unit has been on the scene and is continuing the investigation. An additional press release will be provided at the conclusion.

UPDATE: St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident

On March 30, 2017, at noon, St. Mary's County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a serious motor vehicle collision on Patuxent Beach Road in the area of South Patuxent Beach Road in California, Maryland. When deputies arrived, they found two vehicles engulfed in flames.

The investigation revealed, A 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer, operated by Charles Patton Jr., age 29, of Callaway, crossed the centerline and struck a Mack dump truck, operated by Charles Neal Jr., age 74, of Waldorf, head on, causing both vehicles to leave the roadway. The dump truck overturned with the passenger vehicle underneath the dump truck in a ditch. Patton was pronounced deceased on the scene, and Neal was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Members of the Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. At this time, driver error appears to be a contributing factor. St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Warns Citizens of IRS Tax Scams

With the 2016 tax season deadline quickly approaching, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is receiving calls from concerned citizens regarding two IRS scams trending in St. Mary’s County.

Scam #1 - Scammers are claiming to represent the IRS. They tell intended victims they owe taxes and must pay using an iTunes card, pre-paid debit card, money order, or a wire transfer. The callers threaten those who refuse to pay with being charged with a criminal violation, a grand jury indictment, immediate arrest, deportation or a loss of a business or driver’s license. The Sheriff’s Office warns the “threat” is an immediate sign scammers are calling, and you should hang up immediately.

Here’s what you need to know:

· Generally, the IRS contacts by mail – not by phone.

· The IRS will not ask for payment using a prepaid debit card, a money order or a wire transfer.

· The IRS will also not ask for a credit card number or your bank information over the phone.

What To Do?

First, hang up! Do not engage with these callers; if you owe Federal taxes or think you might owe taxes, hang up and call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you with your payment questions.

If you do not owe taxes, fill out the “IRS Impersonation Scam” form on TIGTA’s website, www.tigta.gov or call TIGTA at 800-366-4484. You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission atwww.FTC.gov. Add “IRS Telephone Scam” to the comments in your complaint.

Scam #2 – Scammers assume the identity of taxpayers by stealing their Social Security number. The scammer then creates a false W-2 form from a company and fills out a return showing a large refund. The scammer then has the refund direct deposited into a money card or other untraceable account. According to the IRS, this remains the most common scam.

Here’s what you need to know:

You receive notification more than one tax return was filed using your SSN.

You owe additional taxes, refund offset or have had collection action taken against you when you did not file.

IRS indicates you received wages or other income from an employer for whom you did not work.

What To Do?

If you are a victim of identity theft, the FTC recommends these steps:

File a complaint with the FTC at identitytheft.gov

Contact one of the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on your credit records: Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion

Contact your financial institutions, close any financial or credit accounts opened without your permission or tampered with by identity thieves.

Respond immediately to any IRS notice; call the number provided

Complete IRS Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit, if your filed return rejects because of a duplicate filing. Use a fillable form at IRS.gov, print, then attach the form to your return and mail according to instructions.

How to reduce your risk:

Always use security software with firewall and anti-virus protections, along with strong passwords.

Recognize and avoid phishing emails, threatening calls and texts from scammers.

Do not click on links or download attachment from unknown or suspicious emails.

Protect personal data. Don’t carry your Social Security Card and make sure your tax records are secure.
