On March 3, 2017, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Smokey Joe’s restaurant located in the 22000 block of Three Notch Road in Lexington Park for a reported “hold up” alarm.  The investigation revealed suspicious persons were in the parking lot with one of the suspects wearing what was described as a large knife in his waistband.

When deputies arrived on the scene, the suspects fled the parking lot. A short vehicle pursuit ensued from the business ending at Pegg Lane when the suspect attempted to evade deputies by leaving the roadway and jumping over railroad ties. Shortly, the vehicle was located abandoned on Ronald Drive in Lexington Park.

Due to prior encounters with law enforcement, the suspect Clinton Maurice Gantt, age 40, of no fixed address, was quickly identified.

He was located on March 5, 2017, and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he has been charged with Concealing Dangerous Weapon, served a warrant for the violation of an active protective order, and issued multiple traffic citations including negligent and reckless driving. He is currently being held at the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, and additional charges are pending upon review with the State’s Attorney’s Office.

On March 7, 2017, at approximately 12:03 p.m., officers from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported armed robbery in Lexington Park.

The Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and continued the investigation. The investigation revealed the victim was held at gunpoint inside a shed in the 46000 block of Shangri-La Drive by two suspects who demanded the victim provide them with his bank card and associated pin number. One suspect fled the scene and attempted to remove money from an ATM nearby.

When the suspect was unable to remove funds, he returned to the residence where both suspects assaulted the victim and produced handguns. At some point, during the assault, one of the weapons discharged more than once. The suspects then forced the victim to the return to the ATM and withdraw money.

The victim was able to flee the scene. He was located by patrol deputies in a nearby area and transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment.

The Criminal Investigations Division identified the suspects as Jeremiah Lee Logan, age 36, of Lexington Park, and the second suspect, Wyatt Naquan Zimmerman, age 32, of No Fixed Address, who was uncooperative and initially provided three different names before being identified.

Logan and Zimmerman were transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where they were charged with Robbery and First Degree Assault.

On Friday, March 4, 2017, the staff of the St. Mary’s County Child Support Enforcement Unit received the coveted Bronze Golden Plate Award as well as the much sought-after Executive Director’s Most Improved Award.  These awards were given to the St. Mary’s County Department of Social Services in recognition of the work performed by the Child Support Enforcement Unit.

Notably, St. Mary’s County is the only jurisdiction to have achieved this annual goal in all four performance metrics. Those measures include the establishment of paternity, the establishment of court orders, collections on current support and cases paying on arrears.

Present at the ceremony were several representatives of the St. Mary’s County Department of Social Services and their partners: Sheriff Tim Cameron, Major Michael Merican, Captain Steven Hall and deputies working in the Child Support Enforcement Unit, as well as representatives from the St. Mary’s County State Attorney’s Office and the St. Mary’s County Court System.

Leyla Layman, Acting Executive Director, presented the awards on behalf of the Maryland Department of Human Resources Child Support Enforcement Administration. Layman stated, “It takes a tremendous amount of work to reach this achievement,” and commented that “a new executive award was created specifically because St. Mary’s County was the only Maryland jurisdiction to have met all four of its performance goals for federal fiscal year 2016.”

Ella May Russell, Director of St. Mary’s Department of Social Services, added, “None of this could have happened without the relationships between the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, the State Attorney’s Office, the Clerk’s Office, and the St. Mary’s County Court System. Our partnerships are crucial, and we are grateful for them.”

#SMCSO to present at Health Awareness Seminars at NAS Patuxent River

  • By Sherry L. Baker Career Development Division Total Force Strategy & Management Department, retrieved from the Tester newspaper.
Gov. Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency in response to the rising heroin, opioid and fentanyl crisis across the state of Maryland March 1.

As reported in January 2017, Maryland is experiencing a rise in deaths from the use of potent and cheap synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, which is 80 times more potent than morphine, approximately 40 to 50 times stronger than street-level heroin and is being mixed with heroin to increase its potency.

According to state data, heroin and fentanyl killed 1,468 Maryland residents in the first nine months of 2016, an increase of 62 percent from the same period in 2015. The data also showed many of those who overdosed started out abusing prescription painkillers and other opioids.

Hogan’s executive order activates the emergency management authority and enables increased and more rapid coordination between state and local jurisdictions to develop effective plans and strategies to address this issue. The order also provides $50 million in funding over a five-year period to support prevention, recovery and enforcement efforts across the state.

Hogan called for an “all hands on deck approach” to the growing rates of heroin, opioid and fentanyl use: “Ultimately, this is about saving lives, and it will take all of us working together in a collaborative, holistic approach to achieve that,” he said. Hogan also called for federal and local governments and nonprofits to step up, as the state cannot bear the entire burden itself.

To learn more about the impact of this crisis and what the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and other community resources are doing to address this issue locally:

  • Join us at the Health Awareness Seminars on Substance Abuse at the Patuxent River Center Stage Theater March 28 from 8-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-4 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office will also be on site with amnesty boxes to collect expired or unused prescription medication during each session.
