The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a motorcycle crash in Lexington Park that resulted in incapacitating injuries to the driver.

On Saturday, July 17, 2021 at around 12:30 am, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of a motorcycle crash in the area of Point Lookout Road and Thompson Orchard Lane in Lexington Park. Deputies and EMS arrived on the scene to find a single motorcycle had left the roadway. The driver was located in a culvert off the side of the road with incapacitating injuries. Due to the severity of injury, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and continued the investigation.

Preliminary investigation determined that Colby Neal Savage, age 24 of Prosser, WA, was traveling southbound on his 2020 Harley Davidson motorcycle when for unknown reasons the motorcycle left the roadway and then struck a telephone pole. Savage was transported by helicopter to a regional hospital and was listed in critical condition.

At this time, speed appears to be a factor in the collision.

It is with profound grief and sadness that we announce the passing of retired Corporal Margaret “Peggy” Ann Smolarsky, who passed away on July 20, 2021 after a hard-fought battle against cancer.

Peggy was born in March of 1958, in Cheverly, Maryland and grew up in Prince George’s County.

Peggy began her career with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office in April of 1999 as a deputy and retired in November of 2016 after more than 17 years of service, to move with her husband of 38 years to South Carolina, as was always their dream. Prior to joining the St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Office, she served as a U.S. Capitol Police Officer for four years.

Peggy had a distinguished career and served in several capacities while at the Sheriff’s Office. She served as a patrol officer for three years and was transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division in 2002. Peggy was a detective for three years, and during that time investigated and closed 275 criminal cases. In 2009, she became the Leonardtown Community Police Officer, and served in that capacity until her retirement.

During her time at the Sheriff’s Office, she received numerous awards and accolades to include the CALEA Gold Standard Accreditation Award, and two Sheriff’s Commendations in May of 2005 for bringing 10 burglary cases to a successful conclusion and a Lifesaving Award in 2006. Peggy was also a member of the Critical Incident Negotiations Team.

Peggy believed in service to her community and to others as evidenced by her numerous selfless deeds and constant involvement in her church. She and her husband Ed went on many missions with their church in service to others and she was the first person to offer her assistance or a kind word to others. Peggy continually exhibited love for others and put other’s wishes above her own. In April of 2021, Peggy travelled back to Maryland and walked a former coworker down the aisle for her wedding.

“Peggy was a good soul and we were very fortunate to have her working alongside with us for so many years,” Sheriff Tim Cameron said. “She will be missed by all those who were lucky enough to know her.”

Peggy is survived by her husband Ed and her three children, Stephanie, Jereme, and Sarah and 10 grandchildren. She is proceeded in death by one granddaughter.

Sobocinski, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Baltimore Field Office. “In today’s world, the threats we face are too diverse, too dangerous, and too all-encompassing for any of us to tackle alone. Original Release: In the continued enforcement efforts against crime committed with firearms in the Lexington Park area, Sheriff Tim Cameron and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office announces the formation and mission of the Youth Gun Violence Task Force that was originally implemented in July 2020.

The reformation of the task force includes reassignment of personnel from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division, Narcotics Division, Special Operations Division and the Criminal Investigations Division. School Resource Officers will later join the task force for the rest of this summer and will return to their assigned schools for the fall session.

To further support this initiative and to expand the approach to community policing, deputies from the Lexington Park COPs Unit have been reassigned to the Patrol Division where they can continue to engage with the community and share their knowledge and experience with Patrol deputies. The Lexington Park COPs Unit will reform after the task force’s work is completed.

The task force’s objectives include high visibility police presence in at-risk neighborhoods to reduce the propensity of gun violence; interdiction enforcement to recover illegally possessed firearms from persons and vehicles; utilize covert investigative strategies to identify suspects involved in gun crimes; review and evaluate both open and closed gun cases for actionable intelligence and engage community members and organizations to solicit information and cooperation.

The four pillars of the task force’s mission are enforcement, prosecution, education and community outreach and violence prevention initiatives which serve to reduce crime and the perception of crime while making the community a better place to live, visit and work.

The Sheriff’s Office will also provide the community with regular updates on the task force’s actions and provide arrest information made by the group.

Community meetings are planned with area businesses, schools and faith-based organizations as the task force continues its work over a three-month period, which will be announced to the public ahead of time. The Sheriff’s Office encourages public participation and input from the community.

“The fundamental goal of this task force initiative is to safeguard the community from the actions of violent criminals who are terrorizing and endangering the safety of our communities,” said Sgt. Shawn Moses, Task Force Coordinator.

While the task force conducts its work, the core values remain professionalism, integrity, respect and sanctity of life, Sheriff Tim Cameron said. “We are making a full commitment of our manpower and resources to dramatically reduce youth gun violence in the Lexington Park community, which in turn will improve the overall quality of life in St. Mary’s County,” he said.

On July 30, 2021, at approximately 11:08 a.m. deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the reported motor vehicle collision with a vehicle on fire in the 30000 block of Three Notch Road, at the intersection of Golden Beach Road, in Charlotte Hall. Deputies arrived on scene and located one vehicle engulfed in flames, with at least one occupant inside the vehicle. Members of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and continued the investigation.

Preliminary investigation determined a 2008 Subaru Outback operated by Aleksandar Andreev Ivanchev, age 38 of Lexington Park, was traveling north bound on Three Notch Road at a high rate of speed. Ivanchev continued through a solid red light and struck a 2005 Ford Escape, which was traveling from Golden Beach Road through the intersection of Three Notch Road, with a solid green light. Upon impact, the Ford Escape became engulfed in flames. The Ford Escape was occupied by two individuals, who were pronounced deceased on scene. The identities of the victims are being withheld pending positive identification. Ivanchev suffered incapacitating injuries and was transported from the scene to an area trauma center for treatment.

At this time, speed and failing to obey a traffic control device appear to be contributing factors in the collision. Anyone who witnessed the collision or events leading to the collision that have not already provided a statement, are asked to contact Sergeant Sheena Tirpak at (301) 475-4200 extension 78051 or by email at Sheena.Tirpak@stmarysmd.com.
