UPDATE:  On March 9, 2019, Carol Jean Anderson, age 87 of Leonardtown, succumbed to the injuries sustained in the motor vehicle collision on March 3, 2019.  Sheriff Tim Cameron and members of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office want to express our condolences to the Anderson family and our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is actively working with the Office of the State’s Attorney regarding additional criminal charges on Machiavelli Tyzhae Savoy.

On March 3, 2019, at approximately 12:44 p.m. law enforcement officers located Machiavelli Tyzhae Savoy, age 20 of Lexington Park, operating a vehicle in the area of Midway Drive in Lexington Park. Savoy is wanted on numerous outstanding warrants, to include Handgun on Person, Handgun in a Vehicle, and Loaded Handgun in Vehicle. Officers attempted to take Savoy into custody, however Savoy refused to stop and a pursuit ensued. During the pursuit, Savoy lost control of the vehicle he was operating while negotiating a curve on Pegg Road.  Savoy’s vehicle crossed the centerline of the roadway, and was struck by another vehicle. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and continued the investigation.

Preliminary investigation determined a 1995 GMC Jimmy, operated by Machiavelli Tyzhae Savoy, was traveling northbound on Pegg Road when Savoy lost control of the vehicle in the area of West Westbury Boulevard. Savoy’s vehicle crossed the centerline, and entered the southbound lanes of travel, where it was struck by a 2016 Volkswagen Beetle, operated by Carol Jean Anderson, age 87 of Leonardtown. Both operators sustained incapacitating injuries, and were transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital; both operators were subsequently transported to area trauma centers for further treatment and remain in critical condition. Located on Savoy’s person prior to being transported to the hospital was a loaded handgun; other items of evidence were also recovered from the vehicle. Additional charges are pending review with the Office of the State’s Attorney.  At this time speed, driver error, and attempting to elude arrest appear to be contributing factors in the collision.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or events leading up to the collision are asked to contact Corporal Brian Connelly at (301) 475-4200 extension *8031, or by email at Brian.Connelly@stmarysmd.com.

In an effort to promote awareness of state traffic laws, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office posts excerpts of the 2018-2019 edition of The Maryland Vehicle Law Annotated on Tuesdays.

Adhering to the law will make roadways in St. Mary’s County and in Maryland safer for drivers, passengers, bicyclists, horse-and-buggy operators and pedestrians.

#TrafficTipTuesdays

Funeral Processions:

Sec. 21-207(a): “Procession may proceed through red light … a funeral procession facing a red signal may continue through or make a turn at an intersection if the first vehicle in the procession already entered the intersection before the signal changed from green to red.”

Sec. 21-207(b): “While a funeral procession is proceeding through a red signal as permitted by this section, a vehicle that is not in the procession may not enter the intersection, even if it is facing a green signal, unless it can do so without crossing the path of the procession.”

Vehicles in a funeral procession are to have headlights on or warning lights flashing.

By law, vehicles outside of the funeral procession do not have to pull over for the procession; that is a courtesy.

The fine for a vehicle entering an intersection occupied by a funeral procession is $60 and one point assessed on a driver’s license or $100 and three points if contributing to an accident.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of other agencies, will be conducting a roadside sobriety checkpoint during the evening of Saturday, March 16, 2019, on Route 235 in Lexington Park.

At Saturday’s checkpoint, law enforcement officers will evaluate drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment. Drivers will also be checked for other traffic infractions.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office recognizes that roadside sobriety checkpoints are highly-visible and efficient tools used in efforts against impaired driving. Advance notification of sobriety checkpoints gives drivers the chance to make better decisions and helps to prevent and deter impaired driving. Advance notifications are also required by law for the validity of a sobriety checkpoint.

Sheriff Tim Cameron asks that everyone drive safely and sober, no matter what the occasion.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday marked the one-year anniversary of the tragic events that took place at Great Mills High School on March 20, 2018.

Led by the Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Corps, a service of reflection and prayer was held at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #7 in Great Mills, followed by a procession to the Great Mills High School campus.

There, Deputy First Class Blaine Gaskill, School Resource Officer for Great Mills High School, and Melissa and Daniel Willey placed flowers at the rock garden in front of the school to honor and remember 16-year-old Jaelynn Rose Willey, who lost her life in the school shooting a year ago, which also left 14-year-old Desmond Barnes injured.

At the remembrance ceremony, Father John Ball said, “We also remember the students, faculty and staff of Great Mills High School and all St. Mary’s County public and private schools. We pray for all who have suffered from acts of violence, both here and throughout the world, and for all whose needs are known to you alone.”

“We give thanks and pray for the men and women of law enforcement who protect and serve our community, for first responders, especially for those who serve in the St. Mary’s County fire and rescue squads,” he said.

“Give us a love stronger than hate and a peace stronger than violence. May peace flow through our community like the waters which frame St. Mary’s County. Help us rise above the hatred that wrought such violence our community suffered,” he said.
