IRS Telephone Scam
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is advising the public to be aware of scam telephone calls from individuals claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The caller is an individual posing as an IRS agent, or law enforcement official collecting debts on behalf of the IRS, in attempt to extort money. The perpetrators will identify themselves as either IRS Agents, or members of law enforcement and will inform the person receiving the call they have overdue taxes and will demand the bill be paid immediately. The caller will want the citizen to pay the overdue bill either through a wire transfer or via a prepaid debit card. In the event the person refuses to pay, the caller will often threaten arrest or suspension of the person’s driver’s license. Some of these callers may actually “spoof” the telephone number of the IRS or local law enforcement, to appear legitimate, as the number will show IRS or law enforcement on caller ID. In an effort to add further legitimacy, the caller may provide personal information they were able to obtain from public sources or social media. Warning signs of a financial scam may include requesting payment immediately, agreeing to work secretly to avoid embarrassment, or directing payment go through third parties or via unconventional methods such as gift cards.
Citizens who have received scam telephone calls may report them to the Treasury Inspector General Administration (TIGTA) through its IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting web page at https://www.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml. The IRS has information at www.irs.gov that can help citizens protect themselves from tax scams of all types. If you have been the victim of a scam, or have questions about suspicious calls concerning debt collection, contact the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office at (301) 475-8008.

Maryland's Move Over Law Expands Oct. 1, 2018
Starting Oct. 1, 2018, Maryland's Move Over Law expands to now include transportation, service and utility vehicles, as well as waste and recycling trucks, with yellow or amber flashing lights or signal devices. These vehicles join the list of protected vehicles under the state's current Move Over Law, which include emergency response and law enforcement vehicles, as well as tow trucks.
The law requires drivers approaching from the rear of vehicles with red, yellow, or amber flashing lights that are stopped, standing or parked along the highway to, whenever possible, move over a lane. This movement should only be done if another lane in the same direction is available and the move can be made safely and without impeding other traffic.
If the driver is unable to make a lane change, the law requires drivers to slow to a reasonable and prudent speed that is safe for existing conditions while passing the emergency or service vehicles.
Motor vehicle-related incidents are consistently the leading cause of work-related fatalities in the United States.
In Maryland, a violation of the Move Over Law is a misdemeanor. The fine is $110 and the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration must assess one point against the driver's license. If the violation contributes to a crash, the fine is $150 and three points against the driver's license. If the violation results in death or serious bodily injury, the fine is $750.

Fatal Collision Under Investigation
On October 1, 2018, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 18000 block of Three Notch Road, in Lexington Park, for the reported motor vehicle collision involving an overturned vehicle. Upon arrival, deputies located the vehicle on top of an embankment with the operator of the vehicle trapped inside. The operator of the vehicle was ultimately pronounced deceased by paramedics on scene. The Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and continued the investigation.
Preliminary investigation determined a 2005 Honda Civic operated by David Joseph Johnson, age 24 of Ridge, was traveling northbound on Three Notch Road, in the area of Kessler Way, when for unknown reasons the operator lost control of the vehicle. Johnson crossed the southbound lanes of Three Notch Road, and struck an embankment. The vehicle continued to travel and struck a tree, at which time the vehicle overturned trapping Johnson inside the vehicle. Johnson suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. At this time speed appears to be a contributing factor in the collision.
Anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or events leading up to the collision is asked to contact Corporal Dale Reppel at (240) 496-6694 or by email at Dale.Reppel@stmarysmd.com. Roberts Promoted to Crime Lab Supervisor
Fingerprinting services expanding
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab has a new supervisor and two new fingerprinting technicians to offer expanded services later this fall.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab has a new supervisor and two new fingerprinting technicians to offer expanded services later this fall.
Megan Roberts was named as the Crime Lab Supervisor in September. Roberts began with the Maryland State Police as a Crime Lab Technician in 2011. In 2012, she joined the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office as a Crime Lab Technician. She has worked on more than 600 cases and has more than 60 courses completed in various specialties.
The Crime Lab now has three technicians and two Fingerprint Technicians, which allows an average of 342 fingerprinting appointments a month, drastically more than the average of 64 a month before. The Crime Lab fingerprinting services for citizens are for employment purposes and Maryland handgun qualifications.
Appointments are required for fingerprinting services, which can be made by calling 301-475-4200, ext. *8046 or by scheduling a time online at http://firstsheriff.simplybook.me/v2/ Fingerprinting can now be done on weekdays, Monday through Friday. Later this fall, services will expand to Saturdays.
The Crime Lab, under the St. Mary’s County Criminal Investigations Division, responds to crime scenes and death investigations, including calls for theft, robberies, burglaries, assaults, sexual assaults, fatal overdoses, suicides and homicides.
Crime Lab Technicians process a scene, determining what items are of evidentiary value – processing and preserving evidence through photography and collecting fingerprints and DNA. The Crime Lab obtains, processes and extracts video surveillance, still images and cell phone information. Evidence brought in by deputies is also processed.
Crime Lab personnel are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, including holidays.
“We’re a full-service crime lab,” Roberts said. “We can accommodate a plethora of requests and have a network of agencies we can outsource to if needed.” Roberts is also an instructor in the Criminal Justice Program at the College of Southern Maryland, teaching Forensic Science and Criminology.
“We are very fortunate to have the career experience and expertise that Roberts brings as the new Supervisor of the Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab,” Sheriff Tim Cameron said. “The work done by our technicians is integral to processing and solving crimes, providing the solid evidence needed to secure convictions in the judicial system.”
“And I am pleased to say that with the addition of two Fingerprinting Technicians to the office, more citizens will be able to access this service at greater convenience,” the Sheriff said.
