Preliminary investigation determined on March 20, 2018, at approximately 7:50 am, Austin Wyatt Rollins, age 17, of Lexington Park, entered the school, where he was enrolled as a student.  Several minutes after entering the school, Rollins shot a 16 year old female he was acquainted with, in the school hallway, gravely injuring the female victim.  A 14 year old male student who was in the same hallway was shot in the leg. The female victim sustained life threatening injuries, and is currently in critical condition at University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center.  The male victim was transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment and was discharged on March 21, 2018.  The investigation is continuing by detectives from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division (CID).

At the time of the shooting, School Resource Officer Deputy First Class Blaine Gaskill, was at the school, and responded to a report of a person with a gun.  Dfc. Gaskill located and confronted Rollins, who was still armed with a handgun in a nearby hallway.  Dfc. Rollins, and the victims were provided with medical attention at the scene; Rollins was subsequently transported to University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.  Rollins was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, Maryland for an autopsy.

All indications suggest the shooting was not a random act of violence. Rollins and the female victim had a prior relationship which recently ended. The investigation has not yet uncovered any public social media posts/threats made by Rollins.  Detectives are continuing to interview friends, family, and associates of Rollins to obtain further information.  Once all facts are collected and verified, information will be disseminated to the public.  Investigation has determined the handgun utilized by Rollins in the shooting was legally owned by Rollins’ father.

On March 30, 2018, Jaelynn Rose Willey was laid to rest. Jaelynn will be missed by all of us at the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office.  On January 23, 2014, Girl Scout Troop #1443, presented Sheriff Tim Cameron and the Special Operations Division K-9 Unit with a ballistic K-9 vest.  Willey was part of that Girl Scout Troop, that worked diligently to raise money for the ballistic vest.

The members of Troop #1443, earned the majority of the funds to purchase the vest by selling fruit cups and lemonade at Earth Day, the Solomon's Boat Race, as well as solicited money from local businesses.

Present at Jaelynn's funeral, were members of the K-9 Unit, who displayed the donated vest to honor Jaelynn's contribution to the Sheriff's Office.  Since the vest was presented, K-9 Noro, and K-9 Brock wore it on many occasions; the vest continues to be utilized and will now be worn by K-9 Cero.  The Sheriff's Office will always remember Jaelynn, and her contribution to protect our K-9 officers who in return are protecting the citizens of St. Mary's County.

Jury Duty Scam

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is advising the public to be alert for a phone scam where the caller is posing as a sergeant with the Sheriff’s Office, and advising the targeted individuals they failed to report for jury duty, and now have active warrants for their arrest. The caller then advises the failure to appear warrant was issued by a judge, or the State’s Attorney for St. Mary’s County, and the individual must pay a fee to have the warrant withdrawn. The caller instructs the victim to obtain MoneyPaks from a local store; MoneyPaks are used to transfer funds to a prepaid card or a debit card. Once the individual has obtained the MoneyPaks they are instructed to contact a fraudulent bond company to pay the predetermined fee and have the warrant recalled.  For the added appearance of legitimacy, the caller provides a number with a local area code, and a three digit prefix of numbers used locally, for the individual to contact. The number provided has an automated directory identifying as the St. Mary’s County Court Services Division.  The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office wants to assure our citizens no legitimate law enforcement officer will call private citizens asking for MoneyPaks/money.  The Sheriff’s Office also wants to remind citizens to never give out personal information to callers they do not know.
