For homebound residents wishing to dispose of unwanted or expired medications, St Mary’s County is offering the 3rd annual Medication Collection Day on April 30, 2016.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office will send uniformed officers to the homes of individuals who wish to dispose properly of their unwanted medications.

Working together with the St. Mary’s County Department of Aging & Human Services this collection effort is provided to those who, due to mobility or health issues, cannot otherwise safely dispose of their medication.

To schedule a pickup contact:

Sarah Miller, St Mary’s County Department of Aging & Human Services, at 301-475-4200, ext. *1073 or
sarah.miller@stmarysmd.com.

This effort is in support of the National Take Back Day where Americans in communities across the country have safely discarded more than 350 tons of unused, expired, or unwanted drugs as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Initiative. Properly disposing of unwanted medications is not only good for the environment, but may prevent residents from becoming targets of crime.

“In addition to this annual collection day initiative, St. Mary’s County offers the means for safe disposal of unwanted medications every day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” said Captain Daniel D. Alioto, Commander St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office, Vice/Narcotics. “To date, nearly 800,000 unwanted medications, 70% of which are controlled dangerous substances, have been destroyed through a partnership with the community.”

Collection boxes located in the front lobby of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office in Leonardtown allow residents to dispose safely of unused or expired medications. Any unwanted medications, prescribed or over-the-counter medications, may be discarded in the drop-box, and all deposits through this program are completely anonymous.

The St. Mary's County Medication Collection and Drop-Off Program is one of the many prevention initiatives supported by the Behavioral Health Action Team (BHAT) of the Healthy St. Mary’s Partnership. The BHAT is comprised of community members and organizations working together to improve behavioral health (mental health and substance misuse) outcomes for all St. Mary’s County residents. Special thanks to the following partners for their continued commitment to the prescription medication collection initiative: St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, St. Mary’s County Department of Aging & Human Services, St. Mary’s County Health Department and MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. The weekly COMPSTAT meetings held by the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office generally revolve around emerging crime trends, but the latest meeting was focused on valuable partnerships. Last Wednesday, Sheriff Tim Cameron hosted a visit from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Baltimore Division.

The Sheriff's Office serves as a satellite office for the FBI Baltimore Division, and Scott M. Hinckley, FBI Baltimore’s Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Criminal Branch, and FBI Public Affairs Specialist Dave Fitz stopped by to thank Sheriff Cameron and his team for their continued support and strong partnership.

Stationed at a satellite office at the Sheriff's Office headquarters in Leonardtown, the resident special agent acts as a liaison between the Sheriff's Office and the FBI. The Special Agent assigned to Southern Maryland operates in partnership with the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) and has been working and assisting with cases in this area since as early as 2004, before being permanently assigned in January of 2012.

Hinckley thanked members of the Sheriff’s Office for their valuable support of the resident agent and the collaborative working relationship.

“I appreciate everything you do on the front lines,” Hinckley told the deputies, “and you work extremely hard to keep the community safe. The threats facing our communities require more than ever close collaboration between the FBI and all our local and state partners. St. Mary’s County citizens are very well served by this collaboration."

The resident FBI Special Agent is available to be used as a resource for all members of the Sheriff’s Office; Patrol, CID, and Narcotics.

Please Join the #SMCSO in Recognizing Public Safety Dispatchers

Each year, the second full week of April is dedicated to recognizing the men and women who serve as public safety 9-1-1 telecommunicators. This year, we ask that all citizens of St. Mary's County join the Sheriff's Office in honoring the often-unsung heroes of public safety – our dispatchers – during the week of April 10-16.

Most people know to call 9-1-1 when they need help, but rarely do they stop to think about the nameless, faceless individuals on the other end of the line. Public safety telecommunicators are more than a calm and soothing voice when things are at their worst. They are knowledgeable and highly trained individuals who work closely with police, fire, and medical personnel.

Although not physically at the scene, the dispatchers who route your calls to the appropriate agency are truly on the front lines. Public safety telecommunicators are generally the first people citizens deal with during a crisis, and are well-trained in reassuring excited or terrified callers, as well as extracting the information necessary to send the appropriate assistance to the right place.

Please join Sheriff Cameron and the men and women of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office in extending our sincere appreciation for the St. Mary’s County 9-1-1 dispatchers.

Cornerstone Church of Lexington Park and the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office, will host a human trafficking awareness event on Friday, May 13, from 7-9 p.m. at Cornerstone Church, 23075 Town Creek Drive in Lexington Park, MD. In Maryland, human trafficking is often overlooked, especially in the rural areas. However, its increasingly regular occurrence has St. Mary’s County groups collaborating to bring awareness to the second largest criminal activity globally.

The event will help attendees spot the signs of human trafficking in our community. Federal, state and county leaders will educate the public on national activity and how demand works, Internet safety, local status reporting, as well as child vulnerability and social safety nets. The event will feature a special guest, the Honorable Judge Michael Stamm, who will discuss the impact trafficking has had on the local foster care system.

The book will present the history of the office through a series of photographs, illustrations, artifacts, articles, newspaper clippings and interviews. The book highlights the oldest and continuously operational Sheriff’s Office in the nation.
