Completion of Detention Center's New Wing Celebrated

State and local officials convened on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 to celebrate the completion of an entirely new wing to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown. The new wing will house a new medical unit and cells for female inmates. Renovation work continues on the rest of the 230-bed detention center, which was originally opened in 1989.

"After 17 years, three approved project designs, countless meetings, miles of air and vehicle travel, contentious political agendas, public hearings, budget amendments and many other roadblocks and hurdles, we finally made it to the finish line," said Major Michael Merican, Assistant St. Mary's County Sheriff and former warden of the detention center.

The completion of a new 64-bed segregated unit for women provides for a "vulnerable and traumatized" population, Merican said. And the new medical wing replaces a "1980s Band-Aid station," he said.

And with the addition of a state-of-the-art security system for the entire detention center, "no longer will we need to hand-manufacture parts," Merican said for the outdated system currently in place.

The new wing is air conditioned and the continuing renovations to the existing facility will also bring central air conditioning, which is not only for the inmates, Merican said, but for the professional staff "who walk the toughest beat in America."

Robert Green, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, called the detention center upgrades "leading-edge construction," and said, "I would also commend the county for investment in leadership."

"This is a very special project, a very special end user," said Gary Whipple, Deputy Director of the St. Mary's County Department of Public Works and Transportation. "This is a 24/7 facility. It is truly a complete project."

"This place is absolutely phenomenal," said Maryland Delegate Brian Crosby.

Female inmates are scheduled to move into the new wing in August.

Scheibel Construction is the contractor for the $29 million renovation and addition project.

SMCSO FORM #44 (R03/08)

Sheriff’s Office announces the formation and mission of the Youth Gun Violence Task Force that was originally implemented in July 2020.

The reformation of the task force includes reassignment of personnel from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division, Narcotics Division, Special Operations Division and the Criminal Investigations Division. School Resource Officers will later join the task force for the rest of this summer and will return to their assigned schools for the fall session.

To further support this initiative and to expand the approach to community policing, deputies from the Lexington Park COPs Unit have been reassigned to the Patrol Division where they can continue to engage with the community and share their knowledge and experience with Patrol deputies. The Lexington Park COPs Unit will reform after the task force’s work is completed.

The task force’s objectives include high visibility police presence in at-risk neighborhoods to reduce the propensity of gun violence; interdiction enforcement to recover illegally possessed firearms from persons and vehicles; utilize covert investigative strategies to identify suspects involved in gun crimes; review and evaluate both open and closed gun cases for actionable intelligence and engage community members and organizations to solicit information and cooperation.

The four pillars of the task force’s mission are enforcement, prosecution, education and community outreach and violence prevention initiatives which serve to reduce crime and the perception of crime while making the community a better place to live, visit and work.

The Sheriff’s Office will also provide the community with regular updates on the task force’s actions and provide arrest information made by the group.

Community meetings are planned with area businesses, schools and faith-based organizations as the task force continues its work over a three-month period, which will be announced to the public ahead of time. The Sheriff’s Office encourages public participation and input from the community.

“The fundamental goal of this task force initiative is to safeguard the community from the actions of violent criminals who are terrorizing and endangering the safety of our communities,” said Sgt. Shawn Moses, Task Force Coordinator.

While the task force conducts its work, the core values remain professionalism, integrity, respect and sanctity of life, Sheriff Tim Cameron said. “We are making a full commitment of our manpower and resources to dramatically reduce youth gun violence in the Lexington Park community, which in turn will improve the overall quality of life in St. Mary’s County,” he said.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a collision on Three Notch Road in California that resulted in several injuries.

On Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at 8:14 pm, sheriff’s deputies and emergency medical services were dispatched to the 22000 block of Three Notch Road in California for the report of a vehicle crash involving three vehicles. Due to the severity of the injuries, the St. Mary’s County Collision Reconstruction Unit was contacted and assumed the investigation.

Preliminary investigation determined that a 2001 Toyota 4Runner SUV, driven by Tyler Wade Hoffman, age 30 of Hollywood, was traveling north on Three Notch Road approaching the intersection with Shady Mile Drive. The Toyota 4Runner struck a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan, which was stopped in the northbound through lane for the red traffic signal. The impact of the collision pushed the Dodge Grand Caravan into a 2019 Mercedes-Benz, operated by Kristopher Burnette, age 41.

The operators of all three vehicles were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Sharon Theresa Savoy, age 61 of District Heights, the operator of the Dodge Grand Caravan, is listed in serious but stable condition at an area hospital.

At this time, speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be contributing factors in the crash.

Anyone with additional information about the crash is asked to contact Cpl. Vincent Pontorno at 301-475-4200, ext. 72337 or email vincent.pontorno@stmarysmd.com.
