Original Press Release (December 7, 2015):

On December 6, 2015, at approximately 3:02 a.m., St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area of Canopy Liquors in Lexington Park, in reference to a subject reporting they had been shot. Upon arrival deputies located the victim, Kevin Jerome Chase, age 45, outside of Canopy Liquors suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. The subject was transported to Washington Hospital Center with non-life threatening injuries. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division (CID) assumed the investigation.

Due to the impending storm, the Human Trafficking Awareness Event has been rescheduled for May 13, 2016, from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Human Trafficking Awareness Event

Cornerstone Church of Lexington Park and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office will host a human trafficking awareness event on January 22, 2016, from 7 – 9 p.m. at Cornerstone Church, 23075 Town Creek Drive in Lexington Park, MD. Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery that involves the illegal trade of people for exploitation or commercial gain and represents one of the most shameful violations of human rights. In Maryland, human trafficking is often overlooked, especially in the rural areas. However, its increasingly regular occurrence has St. Mary’s County groups collaborating to bring awareness to the second largest criminal activity globally.

The event will help attendees spot the signs of human trafficking in our community. Federal, state and county leaders will educate the public on national activity and how demand works, Internet safety, local status reporting, as well as child vulnerability and social safety nets. The event will feature a special guest, the Honorable Judge Michael Stamm, who will discuss the impact trafficking has had on the local foster care system.

Detectives from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Vice/Narcotics Division indicted Danielyn Marshal Winder (Age 36 of Lexington Park) related to felony drug charges. Suspect Winder was also wanted through Calvert County on “Possession with Intent to Distribute” charges as well as an open warrant for “Violation of Probation”. Detectives conducted surveillance on a California, Maryland hotel and witnessed Suspect Winder making a drug transaction. As deputies approached Suspect Winder, he attempted to flee. He was immediately apprehended and arrested. A search and seizure warrant was obtained for his hotel room which led to the recovery of nearly 23 grams of “crack” cocaine (street value $2,400) 24 grams of marijuana (street value $250.00) a quantity of Promethazine/Codeine (street Value $200.00) and $1,785.00 in U.S. Currency. Suspect Winder is being held in the Calvert County Detention Center, and additional charges are pending a review with State’s Attorney Richard D. Fritz.

Armed Robbery at America's Best Value Inn and Suites

On January 23, 2016, at approximately 2:14 P.M., St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of an armed robbery at the America’s Best Value Inn and Suites, located at 21847 Three Notch Road in Lexington Park. The victim, a female employee, advised deputies that two male suspects entered the business wearing dark winter jackets. One of the suspects produced a large black handgun, which he pointed at the victim before demanding money. The victim provided the suspects with an undisclosed amount of currency before both suspects fled the business on foot.

Additional investigation and review of video surveillance by deputies revealed two additional suspects had also been involved in the robbery. Surveillance revealed all four of the men arrived, departed, and collaborated during the robbery.

A lookout was broadcast for the suspects and deputies began canvassing the area. Foot traffic was almost nonexistent due the blizzard conditions affecting the area at the time. While assisting deputies with the search, Sheriff Timothy Cameron located four males in the area matching the suspect descriptions. Subsequently, the suspects fled on foot.

After a brief pursuit, all four were quickly located and detained by deputies and troopers from the Maryland State Police and the Lexington Park COPs Unit without incident. The suspects were identified as Antwan Tyler, age 18, Nicholas Williams, age 18, Daniel Roper, age 19, and Michael Harrod, age 17, all of Lexington Park.

Detectives and Crime Lab Technicians from the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) arrived on scene and assumed the investigation. Distinctive features on all of the suspects clothing were matched to video surveillance and additional evidence was recovered from the suspects. Sheriff’s Office K-9 deputies also located evidence discarded by the suspects as they fled. After consultation with the States Attorney’s Office, all four suspects were arrested and charged as adults with Armed Robbery, Robbery, Assault 1st Degree, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, and Theft Less than $1,000.

The suspect, Joseph David Greenwell, age 18, of California, attempted to conceal merchandise and leave the store without paying. 1-17-2016 – Assault – Deputy J. Kirkner responded to the 26000 block of Yowaiski Mill Road in Mechanicsville, for the report of a disturbance. The victim alleged the suspect, William Pfeiffer, age 56, of Mechanicsville, pushed the victim against the wall during an argument. The victim displayed injuries consistent with the allegations. 1-16-2016 – Assault – Deputy J. Lacey responded to the 17000 block of Jutland Drive in St. Inigoes, for the report of a domestic disturbance. The victim alleged the suspect, Shannon Johanna Dement, age 34, of Saint Inigoes, struck the victim in the face, and she bit the victim on the nose during an argument. The victim displayed injuries consistent with the allegations. Dement was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. She was charged with Second Degree Assault. 1-15-2016 – Possession – Deputy C. Ball responded to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center for the report of possession. During the intake process, a routine search was performed on the suspect, Tina Renee Hancock, age 47, of Leonardtown. The search revealed two baggies containing suspected heroin. Hancock was charged with Possession of CDS in a place of confinement, Posses(ion) of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS), and possession of drug paraphernalia. CASE# 2554-16

1-15-2016 – Failure to Register – The suspect, David Wayne Trent, age 63, of California is a Tier II registered sex offender residing in St. Mary’s County. He received a notice to re-register as a sex offender as required by the statue. He was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. St. Mary’s County Vice/Narcotics detectives identified Darius Timothy Woodland Jr. (Age 21 of Leonardtown) as a distributor of marijuana. As a result of the investigation, a search and seizure warrant was obtained and executed at his home, located in the 41000 block of Norris Road in Leonardtown. Once inside detectives recovered nearly ¾ of a pound of marijuana (street value $1,500), a digital scale with marijuana residue, more than $350.00 in cash, a cell phone, three handguns and related ammunition. Suspect Woodland, Jr. was arrested, and additional charges are pending a review with State’s Attorney Richard D. Fritz.

Detectives observed Melvin Jerome Maddox aka “Melly-Mel” (Age 46 of Lexington Park) in a drug transaction with Brandi Marie Beckett (Age 32 of Lexington Park). Immediately following the transaction, both parties were stopped and detained. Nearly $3,000, packaging material and a cell phone were recovered from Suspect Maddox, and “crack” cocaine was recovered from Suspect Beckett. Both suspects were arrested, and additional charges are pending.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff's Office Vice/Narcotics detectives, working with the Leonardtown Community Police Deputy, identified Michael Anthony Aikens (Age 24 of Leonardtown) as a distributor of cocaine. Search and seizure warrants were obtained for Suspect Aikens and his vehicle, both of which were located in the Leonardtown area. A search of his body revealed nearly $1,000 worth of cocaine secreted upon his person as well as more than $375.00 in cash. A search of his vehicle uncovered a digital scale with cocaine residue and two cell phones. Suspect Aikens was arrested and additional charges are pending a review with State’s Attorney Richard D. Fritz.

The suspect, Matthew Thomas Simmons, age 34, of St. Leonard, was trespassing the establishment after being served with a Do Not Trespass for disorderly conduct earlier the same day. 1/25/2016 – Deputy K. Flelage responded to the 30000 block of Mt. Wolf Road (Food Lion) in Charlotte Hall, for a theft. The suspect, Amy Marie Copsey, age 33, of Mechanicsville, attempted to leave the store without paying for merchandise. Surveillance footage revealed, a suspect matching Copsey’s description attempting to leave the store without paying for a cart of merchandise on January 21 and January 24, 2016. Copsey was placed under arrest and a search for contraband revealed merchandise in Copsey’s purse. Through joint investigation efforts, Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered a previous suspect matching Copsey’s description leaving Bath and Body Works without paying for her merchandise. Copsey was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. She was charged with Four Counts of Thefts Less Than $1000 and Theft Scheme Less Than $1000. CASE# 4022-16

1/19/2016 – Sergeant C. Safford observed the suspect, Willie Sheldon Miller, age 48, of Lexington Park, riding his bike through Millison Plaza. Safford confirmed Miller was previously served a notice Not to Trespass private property (Millison Plaza). Miller was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. The victim alleged the suspect, Eric William Tayman, age 25, of Lexington Park, struck the victim with a motor vehicle. The victim displayed injuries consistent with the allegations. PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY COCAINE DEALER SENTENCED TO OVER 16 YEARS IN PRISON

Previously Convicted Felon Also Illegally Possessed Two Handguns

(January 28, 2016) Greenbelt, Maryland – U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang sentenced Charles Brian Curtin, age 46, of Mechanicsville, Maryland today to 200 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine, and for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Karl C. Colder of the Drug Enforcement Administration - Washington Field Division; Interim Chief Henry P. Stawinski of the Prince George’s County Police Department; and St. Mary’s County Sheriff Tim Cameron.

According to his plea agreement, from at least February through September 4, 2014, Curtin conspired with others to distribute cocaine in and around Prince George’s County, Maryland. Curtin obtained cocaine from suppliers in Tennessee and Maryland. During the investigation, Curtin was overheard by law enforcement discussing the distribution of cocaine using coded language. Curtin stored cocaine, drug proceeds and firearms in multiple residences in Maryland.

On August 22, 2014, law enforcement executed a search warrant at a stash house in District Heights, Maryland used by Curtin and seized cocaine packaging material, a digital scale used to measure cocaine for distribution, and$178,020 in cash. Later that day, a second search warrant was executed at Curtin’s home in Mechanicsville. Law enforcement seized drug paraphernalia, a scale, a .45 caliber handgun and a PLR-16 handgun. Curtin had previously been convicted of a felony and was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

Curtin admitted that during the course of the conspiracy he was responsible for distributing between five and 15 kilograms of cocaine.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the DEA, Prince George’s County Police Department, and St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office for their work in the investigation. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Leah J. Bressack and Joseph R. Baldwin, who prosecuted this Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force case.
